2008 Goals – Year in Review

Another year, come and gone. I can’t believe how quickly it’s flown by! It’s been a very busy, very eventful year, but VERY good, filled with many fun adventures, much personal growth and the meeting of a special someone. ;-)

With the year winding down, I wanted to do a wrapup on my goals for the year.

  • Run three 5ks or one 10k
    – Done! Ran the Flying Pig 10K in May, as well as the Susan G. Komen 5K in September.
  • Become and stay debt free, completing baby step 3 of Dave Ramsey’s plan
    – I became debt free for the first time in a couple years in March. I’m still working on the full 3-month emergency fund, but paying for school (to stay out of debt) is a focus.
  • Complete a minimum of 12 credit hours of classes without incurring any debt
    – Done! 13 credit hours will be completed, with no debt.
  • Complete two landscaping/outdoor projects
    – Done! I finished both the walkway/landscaping bed from the garage to the deck and cleaning/treating the deck.
  • Become more knowledgeable about mutual funds and retirement savings
    – Done! I’ve read several books and many articles online, and continue to stay on top of financial news. I rolled over my old company’s 401k to a Roth IRA and I’m contributing to that for the time being, until I qualify for my new company’s 401k matching plan.
  • Maintain weight
    – Done! Though I’ve struggled with eating healthy since I started the new job, and at times dipped below the goal, I’m currently at where I wanted to be at the start of the year. Thankfully, gaining weight hasn’t been a problem.

I’m very much looking forward to all that’s in store in 2009! I hope God has blessed each of you with a great 2008 and continues to bless you in 2009!

Race For The Cure

Just wanted to post a reminder about the upcoming Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

Please visit my Race for the Cure Page and consider donating to the cause. My goal is to raise $200.

Thanks!

Summer Break, Come and Gone

Well, summer break has come and gone…classes start next week. I’m trying to get myself pumped up for the semester, but it’s a bit tough to do so right now. Can’t say it’s totally unexpected, though. I knew it would be rough going back after having the summer off. But no regrets – it’s been an awesome summer!

I’m doing the same thing this semester as I did with my first – taking one class from the start and picking up a second class half way through. Although each half semester class meeting is long, they at least offer more options and I get to enjoy the rest of the nice weather without being uber-stressed.

First class on tap is Corporate Finance. I’ve heard good things about the class, the teacher I have specifically, so I am looking forward to it. International Business is the other class and starts in October. Having been in a global company for three and a half years, I hope to draw on those experiences to help make it more relevant and interesting.

You may remember a previously post about some of the things I wanted to do with the time off this summer. Here’s an update:

  • Volunteer
Started volunteering for STARS in July
  • Get more involved in church
This is the goal I was most hoping I would be able to do something about and God has really opened the doors of opportunity the past couple weeks. I’ve been a part of a great group for Sunday morning “Adult Bible Fellowship” (a.k.a. Sunday school) since March, and this has led to the other opportunities which I’ll post more later in a separate post… It’s felt really great to be committed to a church again, not just a consumer but a contributor.
  • Look for a new “lavoro”
“Lavoro” is Italian for “job” for those that didn’t quite get my not so subtle attempt to hide my motivations from my current employer at the time. Thankfully, I did get a new job, and it’s been great so far!
  • Take road trips to visit family and friends
Took a trip to NC with friends to visit Lori and Dan as well as a trip to Nashville to visit my brother and sister-in-law. Unfortunately, the white water rafting trip fell through because of the new job, but we went canoeing instead, so that’ll work. We also took a camping trip to Red River Gorge
  • Finish up some projects around the house/yard
The two main projects were cleaning/treating the deck and making a walkway from the garage to the deck. Finished the deck job a month or so ago, and while the walkway isn’t quite done yet, it’s well underway. Hope to get another good chunk done this weekend and should be able to finish before school starts.

Sadly, there were two goals I didn’t quite achieve…

  • Get involved in a creative ministries (specifically puppets)
This is a passion I really need to do something about since I miss it so much. Last I checked, my church doesn’t have an existing group, so I would have to organize one. I have no problem with that, but with classes and other activities starting up soon, I don’t quite feel I have the time to devote to this right now without spreading myself way too thin. It’s a case of determining where God wants my attention right now and I think He’s telling me to look elsewhere for the time being. There is much work that can be done in preparation, though, so that’s where my focus will be for the Fall.
  • Search for grants and scholarships for grad school
I did make a half-hearted attempt on a couple occasions, didn’t have any immediate success finding “cheap and easy” free money (they make you write essays and such for MBA scholarships, too, believe it or not *sarcasm*), and eventually gave up. Good news is that my new company offers much more tuition reimbursement than my previous one, but I have to wait until next year to use it.

It has been a very fulfilling summer and I can look back on it with no regrets and a sense of accomplishment, having worn out instead of rusted out and felt God’s hand in it. I can only pray the fall will be as great.

Race For the Cure

One 5K that’s missing from my list is the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. I’ve skipped it the past two years for various reasons, but since I didn’t do the Redlegs Run for Home this year, I’m going to use that as motivation to do the Cincinnati Race for the Cure next month.

Please visit my Race for the Cure Page and consider donating to the cause. My goal is to raise $200.

And I also wanted to included a reminder here about the other causes I mentioned previously as well. Though some of those events have passed, it’s never too late to donate, and the participants will be very appreciative.

2008 Goals Checkup

It’s been about three months, so let’s do a check up on my goals for the year.

  • Run three 5ks or one 10k
    – Done! Ran the Flying Pig 10K in May
  • Become and stay debt free, completing baby step 3 of Dave Ramsey’s plan
    – I was debt free in March and have stayed that way since. I’m currently building up my 3 month emergency fund.
  • Complete a minimum of 12 credit hours of classes without incurring any debt
    – 8 credit hours have been completed without debt. 5 more credit hours are planned for the fall semester.
  • Complete two landscaping/outdoor projects
    – The walkway/landscaping bed from the garage to the deck has been started; cleaning and treating the deck should be done within the month.
  • Become more knowledgeable about mutual funds and retirement savings
    – I’ve read three books and many articles online, and continue to stay on top of financial news. I’ve reallocated what I have invested in my company 401k and will start additional investing once my emergency fund is fully funded.
  • Maintain weight
    – So far, so good, though it hasn’t so much been a result of exercise as not eating as much due to stress and over all busy-ness.

Good progress so far, much better than in past years! For the first time since I started posting my goals in 2005, I might just reach every one.

2008 Goals Update

It’s two and a half months into the year already. Time’s sure flying by.

As I wait for the UK game to get started (It’s 11:15pm right now, and with the severe weather in Atlanta, the game has been delayed for quite some time, both because of the continuing weather and damage to the Georgia Dome), I thought I’d post an update of my 2008 goals.

My goals for 2008:

  • Run three 5ks or one 10k
First step is done – I signed up for a 10k in January. Now I just need to train for it…
  • Become and stay debt free, completing baby step 3 of Dave Ramsey’s plan
As of 14Mar2008, I’m entirely debt free! And 3 months sooner than I was planning on it being gone! Finally, my personal loan stupid tax from 3 yrs ago is gone, so now I can focus more on saving a larger emergency fund, investments and paying for school. I made some guitar picks from my old credit card.
  • Complete a minimum of 12 credit hours of classes without incurring any debt
4 hours completed (Micro Econ and Financial Acct), I’m currently taking 4 more (Macro Econ and Managerial Acct), and there’s plenty of time to take the other 4 hours. No loans or other forms of debt so far.
  • Finish up some landscaping and outdoor projects
No progress yet, but this is a spring/summer project. Hard to do much in 15″ of snow or soggy ground anyway.
  • Become more knowledgeable about mutual funds and retirement savings
I’ve read two books so far and I’m currently reading a third. I’ve been reading a lot online, too. I’ve picked out 4 funds to invest in and I’ve been watching them over the last couple months, through the up and down market. In addition to my company 401k, in which I’ve been investing for 3 years, I’ll be investing through Vanguard.
  • Maintain weight
I’m on the upper end of where I want to be, but still within the limits.

Well, they’ve postponed the UK/Georgia game. To when? The semi-final round is tomorrow, so this quarterfinal game needs to be played before then. Looks like either UK or Georgia will be playing two games tomorrow. There seems to be quite a bit of damage in Atlanta based on the videos they were showing. Hope everyone’s alright…

Ready or Not

Ready or not, I’m committed now – I just registered for the Flying Pig 10K!

As I mentioned in my goals, I wanted to do three 5Ks or one 10K this year. I decided there’s no time like the present to start reaching for that goal, and I might as well shoot for the moon while I’m at it! While I have been playing some sports over the winter (and Rock Band – hey, it’s a form of exercise, at least the way I play! :-) ), I haven’t had a good multi-mile run since last fall (I hate running in the cold), so I’m a bit out of shape and will need to get on the training if I’m going to run the distance. The good thing is that I’ve maintained my weight since last year, so I’ll be able to pick right back up where I left off. The extra incentive of now being financially invested should help motivate me to start running sooner rather than later… I’m still working on the specific goals for the 10K, such as time to finish, how much I’m going to allow myself to walk, etc., but the big step of signing up for it is now done at least.

I have two marathoner-friends that may stoop down to my level and run it with me…anyone else care to join us?

Oink, oink!

The Changing of Time

Well, another year has come and gone. Wow, where did 2007 go?!? Time flies by ever faster the older I get. A couple years ago, I had an interesting conversation with a friend about this, and she said that time seems to go by quicker because a day, month, year, etc. each become a smaller fraction of your life as time goes by. Hence, a day can seem to go by in a second when you’re 80, but crawls by when you’re a kid waiting for Santa Claus to come down the chimney. High school is a little more than a fourth of your life when you graduate, but at your ten year reunion, it’s only a seventh. And the percentage decreases as you age, and thus the meaning and your memories of it… :-)

I’ve never really understood why we celebrate a new year (or birthdays for that matter). Why not celebrate a new month while we’re at it? Or the changing of seasons? What’s the significance of a year versus any other marking of time? Somehow, a new year has turned into a big thing, and people rely on it and use it as an excuse to “start fresh.” You know, you can start fresh whenever you want; it doesn’t have to be at the beginning of a new year. Sure, it’s convenient to use a man-made time system such as years as a marker to make resolutions and such that will be broken in a month, but why wait? Nothing says you can’t start those same resolutions on the second Wednesday of August – and break ‘em all by the first of September. But then you can start all over again on September 2nd! There are no official laws or rules about starting fresh or making resolutions or goals, so what are you waiting for! Don’t wait for a new year to make amends with someone you’ve wronged, or to forgive someone who has wronged you. Start fresh right now, before it’s too late!

Now that I’ve said all that, I’ll be contrary to my ramblings and write about my goals for this coming year. (Hey, like I said, it’s convenient to use a new year as a yard stick for measuring progress and starting new things, and if it’s something that can help with achieving goals, why not use it…) I do make a distinction between resolutions and goals. In my mind, resolutions are a recipe for failure, usually involving changing a behavior starting now and giving up on it when it’s first broken. Goals are something you strive for, something that is specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely (S.M.A.R.T). I picture a resolution as a line graph that starts high and drops off suddenly, bottoming out after a month or two and staying that way for the year. A goal, on the other hand, starts at the bottom and is a steady incline towards the finish.

As always, whether it’s a goal or resolution, they are usually easier said than done.

I looked back at the goals I’ve posted for the past three years (2005, 2006 and 2007). My track record hasn’t been good. Of the approximately 32 goals I set out to accomplish, only 14 of them were achieved. Of the 18 I fell short on, I’m wondering why I even made seven of them goals. The other eleven I have had some degree of completion on, which is better than nothing, but I know I can do better, and should still work on several of them.

As for my seven 2007 goals, three were accomplished and another was mostly achieved. I used the SMART goal formula to help formulate and plan them, but that didn’t help so much. A long distance relationship and starting grad school threw a monkey wrench into several goals, but that’s okay. Goals need to be rigid enough that you have a plan and can be held accountable for achieving them, but not so rigid that they rule your life and don’t leave room for more important priorities or surprise life events that may come along.

My goals for 2008:

  • Run three 5ks or one 10k
I ran two 5Ks in 2007 with much success, so it’s time to step it up a notch. I’m actually looking forward to warmer weather and more hours of daylight so I can get out and enjoy jogs after work and school. I’ll do the Redlegs, Flying Pig and Susan G. Komen 5Ks or the Flying Pig 10K.
  • Become and stay debt free, completing baby step 3 of Dave Ramsey’s plan
I don’t have much debt, and the debt I do have is still leftover from my five months of unemployment when quit my job in 2005 without having another lined up (not a good idea, no matter what the situation might be!). I’m still feeling the effects from that time, so I’m determined to clean up my finances and get my savings back to what they were prior to that bad decision. This coincides with Dave Ramsey’s Baby Steps.
  • Complete a minimum of 12 credit hours of classes without incurring any debt
I have 55 credit hours to complete to earn my MBA. Five are out of the way. Over the course of the spring, summer and fall semesters of 2008, I want to complete 12 more hours at minimum. The catch to this, and the reason I won’t be more aggressive, is that I will NOT take out student loans or go in debt to get my degree. Based on my budget, I should be able to afford twelve credit hours this year.
  • Finish up some landscaping and outdoor projects
There are two tasks I wanted to complete this past year, but never got around to for various reasons – clean/treat the deck and create a walkway from garage to the deck, with a landscaping bed.
  • Become more knowledgeable about mutual funds and retirement savings
Since I’ve been listening to Dave Ramsey podcasts and reading his books, I’ve become intent on retiring a multi-millionaire. I’ve been investing in my company’s 401(k) since I started, but I can do better, and the best route at present is mutual funds (and Roth IRAs). Once I complete baby step 3, the next step is to be gazelle intense on retirement. I want to get a head start on that, so I’m going to start reading up and “practicing” with mutual funds now. I’ve already checked out two books from the library and I’m anxious to get into them.
  • Maintain weight
I lost a lot of weight last year, have managed to keep it under control over the holidays, and want to maintain it over the year. My problem would not be gaining weight, but rather not losing more, especially if I run as much as I’m anticipating. I need to make an effort to not skip lunch at work, fit in dinner before classes and make sure I eat healthy, without a bunch of empty calories or too many carbs (I’m a sucker for bread).

There are some other goals that I don’t feel like discussing on here, so while the list may be short, it’s not exhaustive. I’ve noticed I can be a lot of talk, but not much action. about some things (and that includes things I’ve said I’d blog about but never have). I’m going to work on that this year by not “talking” so much and when I do, be more intentional about acting on it.

I have a really good feeling about 2008. I have an uncharacteristic hope that some missing puzzle pieces will fit into place over the coming months and that some incomplete aspects of life will finally become complete. The last quarter of 2007 was really something, and the year as a whole was very much a learning and growing experience, and though much of it was tough, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I feel like many of the changes that were started last year will come to fruition this year, and I’ll become more of the person God wants me to be.

I hope everyone has had a great, relaxing, enjoyable holiday season. Many blessings to you and your family this coming year!
