Ready or Not

Ready or not, I’m committed now – I just registered for the Flying Pig 10K!

As I mentioned in my goals, I wanted to do three 5Ks or one 10K this year. I decided there’s no time like the present to start reaching for that goal, and I might as well shoot for the moon while I’m at it! While I have been playing some sports over the winter (and Rock Band – hey, it’s a form of exercise, at least the way I play! :-) ), I haven’t had a good multi-mile run since last fall (I hate running in the cold), so I’m a bit out of shape and will need to get on the training if I’m going to run the distance. The good thing is that I’ve maintained my weight since last year, so I’ll be able to pick right back up where I left off. The extra incentive of now being financially invested should help motivate me to start running sooner rather than later… I’m still working on the specific goals for the 10K, such as time to finish, how much I’m going to allow myself to walk, etc., but the big step of signing up for it is now done at least.

I have two marathoner-friends that may stoop down to my level and run it with me…anyone else care to join us?

Oink, oink!

Good for you Chris! I think it’s kinda funny they call it the flying pig. You’d think they’d pick a leaner animal to represent a race.

Wow… that sounds cool! I checked out the site… good luck! I wish I had more stamina for running. Perhaps it’s time for me to get back out there as well.

I’m not sure that I would be a good running parter for you (or your marathon-ing friends.)

I basically haven’t run since the 5K back in.. the fall I guess. :-/

Jillian – I don’t have much stamina myself, which is why this 10K is going to be a challenge. The 5Ks have been hard enough, but I don’t want to settle there without at least trying a longer distance. I didn’t think I’d ever be able to finish a 5K since I initially despised running. I did it, though, so I’m sure you can as well! Now, going out for a jog after work can be relaxing and I feel really great afterwards.

Nick – We should try to do at least a 5K some time this year. Maybe the Susan G Komen later in the year? And by the way, the Nick’s mom joke was in reference to another Nick, not you ;-)

Hmm. I was thinking about running the 1/2 marathon with my uncle and his kids. I might consider the 10k, though. It really depends on my school schedule.

As far as walking goes, during longer races I like to walk through the water stops. This gives me a nice 30 second to 1 min break every 2 or 3 miles. With a 10k, I’m not sure when to walk. Maybe after 5k?

If you don’t do the 10K, I’ll try to make it down and catch ya at the end of the half. Hope your school schedule works out so you can make the trip!

For my first 10K, yeah, I’d probably walk after 5K and probably again between 8K.

Well I thought the your mom joke was a little out of the blue but then I thought maybe that was just your way of calling attention to the fact you and I had talked about doing this 5k previously. :-)

I think I’ll be passing this year…especially if your doing the 10k! I’ve got a new pair of running shoes still in the box from last year. Maybe when the weather gets a little nicer I’ll try to get back into running every day. We’ll see!
