10 Reasons It Doesn’t Pay To Be The Computer Guy

  1. Most Of Your Accomplishments Are Invisible
  2. Every Conversation You Have Is Roughly The Same
  3. You’re An Expert Of Bleeding-Edge Technology Products, Aren’t You?
  4. Your Talents Are Forcibly Undervalued
  5. You’re Never Allowed A Moment’s Peace
  6. People Ask You To Perform Miracles
  7. Your Assumed “All-Knowing” Status Sets You Up To Let People Down
  8. You Possess Unlimited Responsibility
  9. A Life Of Alienation
  10. You Have No Identity

Read the site for a description of each of these. How true they are – especially numbers 1, 2, 7 and 10! Don’t get me wrong, I really don’t mind helping out people with computer problems and if you have done this, please don’t take it the wrong way, but just remember that a) there’s a time and place for such questions (I’ve been at weddings, on dates, [Added: and at Kings Island!], etc. and been asked computer questions), b) that we’re so much more than just “computer guys” (yes, we do have social lives and a life apart from computers! Ask us about our hobbies sometime!) and c) since I work with computers all day, I don’t want to spend my weekend thinking about and working on computer issues, too.

One interesting side affect of graduating and beginning to serve in a local church was that I lost some of my identity as a tech guy. I’ve had much fewer tech requests in the last two years.

On a side note, I tend to have trouble seeing the text that I type in your forms. Is it just me?

Try being the “math guy” sometime…

    Hey Ben, what’s x times y?

    Hey Ben, what’s a plus b?

Hey Ben, what’s the square root of 2357942346859431?

So yeah, I feel your pain.

*sigh* I asked a computer question at Kings Island today. Okay, so right-click then select properties then go to device manager then… Yeah, like they’re gonna remember all those steps for later.

Nick, you’re just having trouble seeing the text you type in this text box? The comments themselves, once posted, are okay? Will increasing the text size of your browser improve that? Send me a screenshot if you want and I’ll look into it.
