Cornhole: The Movie

The Enquirer reports on Cornhole? The Movie?.

I think only these words could be used to describe it: “a low-budget mockumentary”

Movie aside, it’s a great game. It’s spring-time, so time to break out the boards!

For those of you not familiar with it, Wikipedia will educate ya.

Ten Ways Being a Geek Makes You More Attractive

Ten Ways Being a Geek Makes You More Attractive

Eat your heart out girls :-)

  1. You’re probably very smart.
  2. It’s hip to be geek. Everyone is familiar with the stereotype of thick glasses, a pocket protector, an obsession with star trek, and social skills akin to a sack of potatoes. Times have changed: geeks are often fashionable, hip individuals who are very aligned with the trends of their own generation.
  3. You geek out on more than just your computer. Ever seen the movie collection of a film geek? Ever had an automotive geek work on your car? Ever seen the body of a fitness geek? The tenacity of someone like us, when applied to hobbies outside computers and the like, can yield impressive results.
  4. Geek humor is the best humor. This is perhaps a biased opinion, but I’ve never laughed as hard as I have while reading some of the random, funny things that came out of geek culture.
  5. You listen to good music. Geeks have access to tools that allow us to hear music that extends well beyond top 40 radio. Want the entire discography of Aphex Twin by tomorrow afternoon? Ask a geek. Not only do they listen to good music, they can find just about anything you’re looking for in a heartbeat.
  6. You make good money. If there’s one stereotype about geeks that usually rings true, it’s that they rarely have trouble earning a decent income.
  7. You fix stuff. Everyone loves a handyman, especially one that can fix one of the most frustrating devices ever conceived: a personal computer.
  8. You’ve got your own stuff going on. You’ll never meet a geek who runs out of things to do, they’ve got lots of hobbies and interests and are more than happy to dive head first into one of those when they’ve got some spare time. In other words: they won’t rely on you to give them a life.
  9. You’re very articulate. Compulsively reading a few hundred RSS feeds a day yields a vocabulary that could put most college English majors to shame.
  10. You’re passionate. When a geek becomes interested in something, they tend to immerse themselves in it entirely. They’ll strip a new gadget down to nuts and bolts and re-build it with an xhtml compliant grappling gun. This intense passion can extend to many areas of a geek’s life, not just computers and hobbies.

New Job

I have a new job! Well, sort of… On Friday, my boss approached me about a job opening in the company and thought I would be a good candidate for it. This was a position I’ve had my eye on for a while, so I immediately said I was interested. The job was posted intra-company and three candidates expressed interest. Interviews were on Tuesday and I was offered the position today!

And now I’m exhausted. I’ll be splitting my time 50/50 between my current job and new for a while, so it’s going to be crazy. Both jobs are in the same department (Data Management), so it’s a horizontal move, but I will be going back to one of my loves – web programming. Yay! It won’t be web programming like I’ve done before, but it’s still web-oriented, so that’ll do.

It’s gonna be tough for a while, getting trained on and learning new things while still trying to keep most of my current workload, but I think it’s a great opportunity.

Two years with the company and this is my third job there…I really would like to stay in a position long enough to become an expert, but with opportunities such as this, it’s hard to stay in one place.

Saturday Six…On a Monday

I’m a little late on getting this one posted, but better late than never! Let’s hear what you have to say. Leave your answers in the comments here or on your website/blog with a trackback/pingback. I’ll get my answers up soon, too.

1. What was your favorite animated cartoon series when you were little?

2. What was your favorite “live action” children’s series when you were little?

3. Who is your favorite muppet character?

5. Have you ever appeared on a locally-produced children’s show, or would you have ever wanted to?

6. Cartoons like “The Flintstones,” though animated, were really intended for adults. What’s your favorite adult cartoon?

What Famous Work of Art Are You?

Simple little quiz I saw somewhere:

The OCLC Top 1000

The OCLC (Online Computer Library Center) lists its “top 1000 titles owned by member libraries-the intellectual works that have been judged to be worth owning by the ‘purchase vote’ of libraries around the globe.”

The top 10 are as follows:

  1. Bible
  2. United States Census
  3. Mother Goose
  4. Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri
  5. Odyssey by Homer
  6. Iliad by Homer
  7. Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
  8. Lord of the Rings [trilogy] by J. R. R. Tolkien
  9. Hamlet by William Shakespeare
  10. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll

Britannica Blog takes this list and brings you some Fun Facts About the OCLC Top 1000. Here are a few select factiods from the list:

How many works by Shakespeare made the list? 37.
How many works by Stephen King made the Top 1000 list? Zero, to our surprise. Gunslinger ranked 1080, though.
Which author has the most works on the OCLC Top 1000 list? William Shakespeare (with 37 works). He is followed by Charles Dickens (16 works) and John Grisham (13 works).
What work on the Top 1000 list has the richest publication history, i.e., the most manifestations, as represented by OCLC libraries’ holdings? The Bible, followed by the Haggadah. Divine Comedy was third and the Koran fourth.
How far down the OCLC Top 1000 list do you have to go to get to a live author? Jim Davis’s Garfield is number 18 on the list. (Four of the five top works by living authors are cartoons!) And in case you’re wondering, Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird is the highest-ranking work by a living female author. It ranked 146.
Fighting like cats and dogs . . . Garfield is number 15 on the list. Snoopy is 69.

Flying Pig, Here I Come

No turning back now…I’m officially registered for the Flying Pig 5K. I’m feeling a whole lot better about my training this year than I did during last year’s training, which was for the Redlegs Run for Home 5K. I’m not sure if my co-workers will actually do this and my friend Carrie that supported and ran with me for the Redlegs 5K is doing the marathon, so I might be on my own this time around. Anyone else up for it? Jeremy? ;-)

Drama in the Bluegrass State

Well, it’s begun. First, Tubby left UK for Minnesota. Speculation about a new coach began immediately, and the list is long with possibilities. Now, Randolph Morris has signed a free agent contract with the New York Knicks, meaning he will not return next season. The status of the potential recruits such as Jai Lucas and Patrick Patterson is still up in the air as well, so it’s anybody’s guess what the team will look like, much less how successful they will be, next season.

I put up a new poll, asking “Who Should Be Kentucky’s New Coach?” I came up with 16 names that I’ve heard tossed around. That’s quite a lot! Place your vote on who you want to lead the team to it’s next championship

Breaking News: Tubby Smith Heading To Minnesota

According to ESPN.com, Tubby Smith has left UK for Minnesota.

Tubby Smith is leaving Kentucky to take over the head coaching job at Minnesota, multiple sources told ESPN.com’s Andy Katz on Thursday.

Smith had four years remaining on his Kentucky contract.

Smith has met with Kentucky players and athletic director Mitch Barnhart. He is expected to fly to Minnesota later Thursday afternoon.

Smith called former Minnesota coach Dan Monson early Thursday and told him he was accepting the job. Minnesota is expected to pay Smith $1.8 million per year.

Wow, I’m shocked! Of all the things that could happen regarding Tubby, this is not one I anticipated. Let the speculation begin – the next coach (Donovan? Travis Ford?) and which players will stay or jump ship (Morris? Crawford?).

Let’s Take a Skywalk

This weekend, the world’s highest man-made structure (their claim) will open – the Skywalk over the Grand Canyon.

Grand Canyon West, a destination owned and operated by the Hualapai Tribe at the Grand Canyon’s western rim, announces March 28, 2007 as the official public opening date of The Skywalk. The Skywalk will be the first-ever cantilever shaped glass walkway to suspend more than 4,000 feet above the canyon’s floor and extend 70 feet from the canyon’s rim.

Access to The Skywalk will run from dawn to dusk and will cost $25 per person in addition to the cost of a Grand Canyon West entrance package. One hundred and twenty people will be allowed on the bridge at a time. Admittance is first come, first serve for walk up visitors; however, reservations can be made. Guests will enter and exit the walkway via temporary buildings while the adjacent visitor’s center is being completed. Grand Canyon West plans to issue numbered shoe covers – in order to avoid scratches and slipping – to each visitor that enters the open-air walkway.

That has to be one spectacular view! More pictures here.
