Brisco County Rides Again

Sweet!

The Adventures of Brisco Country, Jr. coming to DVD

Anyone remember this show from the early 90′s, starring Bruce Campbell? One of my faves at the time. I’m really glad that all these old TV shows are being released on DVD now, with extras and such.

Scrubs and…Kutless?

I’ve only seen the TV show Scrubs a few times. It’s fairly funny, but I just haven’t gotten into it. For whatever reason, I tuned in for the last half of tonight’s episode and was pleasantly surprised by what I heard. Towards the end of the show, they started playing a song by KutlessAll The Words. I’m not talking about a small 10 second clip, either, but practically the whole song! What’s really surprising is that this song is very spiritual, as evidenced by these lyrics, which were came through loud and clear (not talked over) on the show:

By Your grace You let me come talk to You
It’s not that I’m worthy I thank you Jesus
For the love that You have shown

I’m very surprised since spirituality isn’t something that I would associate with this show…

Geocaching Milestone

GeocachingIn June of 2005, I posted about a new sport I was getting involved in: geocaching. Since then, I’ve been lucky enough to find 46 caches across four states – Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, and Tennessee. That’s only a small drop in the bucket of geocaches around the world. According to geocaching.com, the primary site of the sport, there are 248925 active caches in 221 countries. I’ve got a lot of work to do!

When I reach the milestone of finding my 50th cache, I’m going to “celebrate” by hiding my first cache. I have three places in mind. One is at Boone County Cliffs State Nature Preserve. There are a couple of caches hidden right down the road at Middle Creek Park but none at Boone County Cliffs. The Cliffs aren’t too far away from me, and it’s a really nice place to hike, so it would be fitting to hide a cache there.

A second place that I have in mind is Pioneer Park. It’s a small park off of KY 17 in Independence, KY. I’m surprised that there are no caches there yet, though three are located at Doe Run Lake, which isn’t far away.

Florence Ya'llThe third place I have in mind is at a spot that many people associate with Florence, KY and is often the first thing a person mentions when I tell them I’m from this area. It’s a landmark that’s recognizable to just about anyone who has driven through this area. Yes, that’s right – the Florence Ya’ll Water Tower. (Read the history behind the water tower) One of the objectives of geocaching is to draw people to landmarks, and this is certainly one of them. Hiding a cache here would be a bit difficult, though, considering it’s a high traffic area and not many trees, bushes, etc.

So, while I’m deciding where to hide my first cache, I’m taking some suggestions on a theme for the cache. Caches don’t necessarily need to have a theme, but I think it’s more fun if it at least starts out that way. By theme, I’m simply referring to the name of the cache and the types of items that I will initially leave inside. As people find the cache, they have the option to take an item and leave an item, hopefully based on the theme, though it’s not necessary. Some of the themes I have in mind are right now are: UK sports, technology and books. Any other suggestions?

While shopping for supplies for my cache, I ran across this shirt and couldn’t pass it up. Lol, how true it is!

I’m Back

Wow, it’s been awhile since I’ve posted. This has probably been, or is at least close to, the longest stretch that I’ve had without some kind of post. Part of the reason for the absence is because I haven’t really had anything to say; another part is that I’ve been busy. I was out of town this weekend, the second weekend this month that I’ve been lucky enough to take a road trip. I was down at my grandparents farm in Western KY again, this time with my parents, my aunt and uncle, and my brother and sister-in-law even came up for a while on Saturday. It’s always good to get out of town and see the family.

I had the chance to find 8 geocaches this weekend, seven on the way home on Sunday. Highest total for a single day to date. Granted, they aren’t caches where I have to hike miles to find them, but that’s still quite a few. I think I’ve found more geocaches in the past two weeks than I did all of last year. I’m nearing #50 and hope to break 100 by the end of the year.

Wow, how about the NCAA Tournament?!? I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen so many games coming down to the wire. It has definitely been exciting exciting, with a ton of surprises, including the surprise cinderella team of 11 seed George Mason in the final four. Needless to say, my bracket is trashed, but so is everyone else’s. I guess I’m going to be rooting for an all SEC final (LSU vs Florida) and I’ll be cheering for LSU to win it all.

That’s all for now. More later.

Training for a…5K?!?

Those of you who know me may want to be sitting down when you read this. It may come as quite a shock…

I’m going to start training for a 5k!

Yes, you read that right – I’m going to start running.

Those of you who really know me know I hate running for the sake of running. Always have. I’m fairly active, playing racquetball, ultimate Frisbee, biking, hiking, etc., but I’ve never been one for running. I’ve tried to get into it, too. My freshman year of college, some of the guys in my dorm got up at 6am the first week of classes and ran around campus. Needless to say that didn’t last too long! Back in my apartment-living days, I tried running after work one summer. I think that lasted a couple of weeks, on and off of course. :-) Running is just boring to me – and it hurts, in my sides and in my shins. I have no problems running for ultimate (lots of running there), football and the rest, but running to run just isn’t something I’m made for.

However, a couple weeks ago, I just got this sudden urge to make a goal of completing a 5k. That’s roughly 3 miles and seems doable to me, despite my loathing of running. I have no clue where this desire came from, but I can’t let the thought go…as much as I want to. So here I am, putting this in writing to the world so I can’t easily back out. You all have to keep me accountable on this!

A couple days after the desire for a 5k came over me, my friend Scott emailed me about a bike ride to raise money for MS research. It’s 150 miles over two days in July. Yikes! The training for this ride is pretty rigorous and I don’t think I can commit to it at this point in time, though, especially since it’s only a few months away. I’m going to help him train and in the process start my training for a 5k. Hopefully I’ll be ready for the bike ride next year, too.

Yes, this is going to take a lot of hard work and motivation. I’m not used to this kind of work out. Like I said earlier, my exercise comes from sports and such, so training for an event down the road is new to me. I’ve already started my training – to some extent: sit-ups, crunches, shoulder presses and bicep curls. I’ve got a lot more to do, though. I’m going to try following The Couch-to-5K Running Plan, which seems like something I can follow and commit to.

I’ve started looking into some 5Ks in the area, trying to nail down an ultimate goal for which to strive. First on my list is Cincinnati’s most popular race, the Flying Pig 5k. The race this year is on May 6, too soon for me to be ready. I’ll have to shoot for it next year.

The Redlegs Run for Home 5K Race is in June, giving me another month to prepare, but I still don’t think I’ll have enough time to be fully ready for it.

The Heart Mini-Marathon is this coming weekend, March 26, so that’s out as well.

So, I have plenty to shoot for next year, but I’d like to find one in September or October.

Anyone local feel like running and helping me train? Anyone know of a 5k in the Cincinnati area that’s later this year?

Wish me luck!

Saturday Six Meme…on Monday

Oddessey2000 tagged me with the Saturday Six Meme. Here we go…

Here are this week’s questions. Either answer them in a comment here or answer them in your own blog and leave a comment here with the link to that entry. To be considered “First to Play,” you must be the first person to answer the questions here or leave the complete link to the specific entry in your blog in which you answered the questions. Enjoy!

  1. How did you celebrate St. Patrick’s Day?
  2. What is your favorite green food?
  3. Other than Christmas or Thanksgiving, what holiday do you generally spend the most for when you celebrate it?
  4. It probably seems like winter may have already disappeared from this year based on the warm weather much of the country experienced this season, but if you had to eliminate one season entirely, which one would you choose and why?
  5. If you then had to replace the season you eliminated with one of the three remaining ones, meaning that we’d have six months of one season, which would you choose and why?
  6. How many of your old school yearbooks (or annuals) do you have today? If you let someone read the messages people wrote in them, would they think you were popular, not popular, or somewhere in between?
  1. How did you celebrate St. Patrick’s Day?
Didn’t really celebrate it. I wore my green on Thursday so I could wear UK blue on Friday :-) After work, I just went home, relaxed and watched basketball all night, including a UK win over UAB.
  2. What is your favorite green food?
Um, green beans or lettuce, I guess.
  3. Other than Christmas or Thanksgiving, what holiday do you generally spend the most for when you celebrate it?
Halloween, just because I have a party around that time of year.
  4. It probably seems like winter may have already disappeared from this year based on the warm weather much of the country experienced this season, but if you had to eliminate one season entirely, which one would you choose and why?
Winter, because it can be so gray and gloomy. If it snowed a lot, and didn’t melt and get all slushy, I’d like it better.
  5. If you then had to replace the season you eliminated with one of the three remaining ones, meaning that we’d have six months of one season, which would you choose and why?
Fall – I love that time of year, with the cooler, yet not freezing weather, the leaves changing colors and falling, and just the overall atmosphere of it.
  6. How many of your old school yearbooks (or annuals) do you have today? If you let someone read the messages people wrote in them, would they think you were popular, not popular, or somewhere in between?
I still have my two middle school yearbooks, all four highschool yearbooks and 3 yearbooks from Georgetown College. NKU didn’t do yearbooks. I think I still have a yearbook of sorts from elementary school, too. If people read the messages, they’d probably think I was popular, because I only had my friends sign it, and of course they all wrote good things. :-)

I’m not gonna tag anyone, but if you’d like to answer, feel free to do so in the comments.
