The Plan

Well, I heard back from my hosting company, pair.com. I was hoping to be taking this space to sing their praises and dance a little jig as they told me that they could restore my database from their backup. Alas, no such luck. Here’s the response I received from them:

“We are sorry to report that we are unable to issue database restorations for users at this time. The backup structure used does not permit simple individual table restorations but rather nearly all of the files on the server need to be restored at once. In this manner the backups are for “disaster recovery” where entire servers need to be rebuilt. Should you have any additional questions please let us know.”

In other words, I’m gonna have to do this the hard way. Here’s the plan, as of now. First thing is that I’m going to backup my existing website layouts and supplementary sites. Yes, good idea, huh? :-) After that, I’m going to wipeout my old version of wordpress and install the latest version. Then, I’ll work on a redesign, which may or may not be original. There are several absolutely fantastic wordpress themes out there that anyone can use, so I may just go with one of those for now. Once I have wordpress upgraded, and a new design in place, I’ll import that last backup I had, which should bring me up to at least November. At that point, I’ll start wading through the google cache and getting the rest of the posts. Once all the posts are back, I’ll make it live again and we’ll go from there. Plan B, if I run out of time or get impatient, is to just do the upgrade, use my old design, and go live with a fresh blog (no entries). Maybe, as time permits, I’ll import the old entries, but not right off the bat. Those are my thoughts at this point in time. We’ll see how it goes today. Hey, I’m essentially blogging right now, so who needs fancy software or a database! :-/ Keep checking back and hopefully something will be up soon. Thanks for your patience.
